In losing ourselves we find ourselves...

I hate that football takes people away from church. ...just sayin.... just go to church!

Well, the baptism summarizes the best part of the week I think. it's been a good week.

We have a good group of investigators but we're struggling with helping them progress. they'll keep some commitments, but not all of them.

The Preach my Gospel manual defines a progressing investigator as someone who has had 2 or more lessons and are keeping commitments.

So as I was studying preach my gospel, I noticed a subtle promise. If you want to help your investigators progress, improve your studies. so I have been. in my studies I've been focusing a lot more on the people we're going to teach, instead of my goal to read through the bible.

and it's been interesting. I'm still working on it but the time goes by faster and I think it'll pay off in the long run. (by the way, I just finished the book of Lamentations today. and it coincides extremely well with what i'm reading in the book of Mormon. it's just so cool to see the support the two books give each other.

I can testify that God answers our prayers as we serve His children. We receive revelation for ourselves when we seek revelation for others. It's truly in losing ourselves that we find ourselves. I don't have all the answers I'm seeking yet.... Nevertheless, I know missionary work brings a healing power into our lives.

Love you all!

Turtlehead Peak, Red Rock National Park on Presidents Day

Our President's Day Hike. We went to the top of Turtlehead peak. Lost the trail more times than I can remember. but we made it! We went with Bishop Albright and his family and some of the youth in the ward.

Turtlehead peak is in Red Rock National Park.

There's red rock... original name right?
but it really looks like it's painted on.

Us with Bishop Albright,
and me with his daughter.

Ally wasn't super comfortable with the intensity of the hike, it was fun encouraging her. and she got to the top!!! super proud of her.

We got a good view of the strip too.

Jackie's Baptism

Jackie is baptized!!! There were so many people that came, they couldn't all fit in the relief society room.

we had everyone move into the chapel for the talks, and then we all moved and crowded into the RS room for the baptism and then went back to the chapel for the rest of the program. there was a luncheon provided by the young women. soooo many people. and it worked a lot better than I thought it would have.

I gave the talk on baptism. a high councilman came up to me afterwards, Brother Lacey, and said that it was the best talk he's heard at a baptism on baptism. it makes me think that I should give more thought into teaching/helping people.

Jackie's parents came to the baptism, which is a miracle. Her mom wouldn't let her get baptized - so Jackie waited and got baptized on her 18th birthday.

Surprisingly, her mom and dad came and it was amazing. I think her dad is more open to learning about the gospel. her mom... well, just the fact that she is not keeping Jackie from coming to church is amazing. :)

The opposition actually helped Jackie though. she saw that when she went to other churches, she didn't enjoy it.

She feels at home in the LDS church.

Her mom had her research why people left the church before she joined it.
She did, but she still had the faith that God was directing her to the LDS church because of who she is becoming by being a part of it.

so cool. it was a good day.

Good Good Times

Hola!

So Steve was less active... well, in active for 12 years. his family was pretty active. we just went over every week and shared little spiritual thoughts. Well, Steve decided to come back to church. I think for several different reasons. He  has a social conversion but he wants to figure out the spiritual things. We started teaching him the lessons. I love this family. Steve said the closing prayer, and his wife cried. He told us we can count him as a conversion. we're still working through his questions. but he's committed. he even came to church instead of watching the play offs. I think his faith is growing. we talked about how a belief is just something you want to be true. and then you can ask God if it is true. I really believe that. perhaps all religion is invented to fascinate our minds, and if it is, at the end of my life I will have been a good person and I've been happy. and if it's true, how proud will I be of my choices when I stand before God and I can live with Him. :) I'm looking forward to our lessons with him.

Jackie is all set for her baptism on Saturday. her family is not supportive at this point. She got a blessing and in it God said that when there is a lot of opposition, there is a lot of good. it's the law of heaven. I thought about my own experiences. how I've had a lot of experiences that were hard, and just thought about how the law of opposition means that good must be there too. i'm feeling that good now, i'm hoping there will be good in future relationships.

On exchanges this week, I met a transvestite, taught a schizophrenic, and had steak at their bishop's house. it all really does balance out. ;)

we have several potential investigators that we're trying to find a good time with. it's been a good week. we have another baptism next Saturday. good good times.

Love you all!

Living in the Desert... Cheyenne Mountain, Las Vegas NV

Desert, Desert, Desert. This is a wild cactus on Cheyenne Mountain.
Trisha on Cheyenne Mountain
I saw the American flag at the top of the Cheyenne Mountain one day while we were proselyting, and said "We're going up there".

This was taken on New Years Day when we went up there with our district.

We Made it!!!

"We want to prepare for baptism"

Well hello there!

New Years Eve we got a text from Wendy (she's the one who sent you a video on thanksgiving). We haven't taught them anything. We mainly just pop in for a moment, hear how they are doing, help with anything we can, and go on. We've spent a lot of holidays with them and i love them. Their oldest daughter is a member and she's preparing for a mission. They have a 14 year old daughter as well. Ok so Wendy texts us and says how we've been such an inspiration to them. It was very sweet but it came out of no where. It seemed there was something else going on her mind. I asked what provoked such a complement and she asked if we were sitting down. We were playing a game new years eve night (we had to be in the apartment by 6pm). She said "Donnie and I want to prepare for baptism". GAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! ... that's really what i put in the response back to her. hahaha. So excited. They've always been so supportive of Katie's involvement in the church but had a wall up for themselves. There were those moments when I thought they had a testimony but they weren't open about it. So we knew they'd get baptized at some point but we didn't think it'd be this soon. So we went over Thursday evening and taught them and their  younger daughter the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They know a lot about the church.... but then again they don't. They haven't had the lessons so they know a lot of details that members tend to bring up but they haven't seen the big picture... which is what the lessons do. We talked about how Christ set up the church when he was on the earth with 12 apostles. and how that has been restored. there are 12 apostles on the earth today. Wendy says with a smile "oh! i hadn't thought of that." The spirit was so strong. i love teaching the restoration because i can see it through someone else's eyes and my testimony strengthens. Donnie has a baptism date set for the end of February. He likes to have goals so he can prepare. Wendy and Julia are waiting to set a date.

The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored.... restored! not changed, not reformed, not adjusted, restored! It's the same thing that Christ set up on the earth. That means we have the Priesthood.

There was a baby blessing on sunday. There must have been 25 men in that circle. it was huge! and i'm pretty sure most, if not all, of them were family members. in the blessing for this baby boy, the dad said something like "you are surrounded by righteous men that hold the priesthood." and it hit me so hard! The power to act in God's name is on the earth AND there are men who are worthy to use it. I thought I saw my own future child's baby blessing. The feelings that I had were gratitude that it could happen.

New years day we went hiking on Cheyenne Mountain as a district. there's a flag at the top. i saw it one day (it's in our area) and i said "we have to get up there". so we convinced the elders to come with us and we did it! there's no trail at all. extremely sharp rocks. i climbed up a little part and it looked like i had taken a rasp to be my finger tips. but it was so much fun. we wrote our names in a notebook that was left in a peanut butter jar. super fun . :)

I'm feeling a lot more hope for the future recently. http://www.lds.org/ensign/2010/01/the-best-is-yet-to-be?lang=eng I'm learning to take what was good from the past and hope for that in the future, prepare for it, plan for it, but to leave the ashes in the past. to leave it on the dung heap as elder Holland put it  and to leave it there. i'm starting to feel like i'm worth what i would hope my life would be. so i'm doing good. :)

I love you all!

Christmas 2013: Corners, Puzzles, Stockings, Bushes and Golf Balls

Our Sister Missionary Christmas Corner. :)

I played Santa for Sister Kellar because she didn't have a stocking.
Everyone needs a stocking surprise on Christmas! :)

We had fun putting the puzzle together.  Thanks Erik and Kristen!

The Gibson's Christmas Bush. Julia went and got one out of the forrest up north. she thought it was smaller.... but it wasn't...

We found a golf ball stuck in the cement.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

Dinner, Skype and Bacon Wrapped Green Beans ...

As time goes on, I know less and less of what to say in these letters. :(

but it was a wonderful Christmas. It was fun to see differen't peoples family traditions. Christmas eve we made pizza and t shirts with the Bishop's family. Christmas morning we had breakfast with the Gibson's and the afternoon was spent giving treats to a family in our ward and skyping mom, dad, and craig. i'm so sorry I wasn't able to Skype anyone else. when we were done talking, no one else showed as online. I recorded a video message for you though so hopefully you saw it! I really feel like it wasn't long enough. I wish I could just call you all up right now instead of  writing an email on a key board that isn't working very well. I miss you guys so much. I think when I get home i'm going to look for a job close to home. the evening we had dinner with the Jennings. it was delicious! steak, mashed cauliflower, bacon wrapped green beans, and roasted vegetables. I stuffed myself. and they sent us home with left overs :) we watched A Christmas Carol afterwards. :)

Church was busy for us... no investigators... but we taught gospel principles and the combined 3rd hour. the lessons went well. I was surprised but how willing everyone was to participate. it was good. hoping that they'll all act and open their mouths!

we did a lot of caroling this week.... we didn't have a whole lot more to do. so many people are out of town. as much as I love all the kindness that has been shown to us by members, i'm looking forward to people being home so we can teach them.

you might have to start asking me questions so I know what to write about.

love you all!

Christmas Carol Tracting December 2013

Merry Christmas!!!

I'm so excited to Skype on Christmas Day!!!!

I must apologize. I intended to send out Christmas cards.... but I don't have anytime on Pdays to write... i'm hoping it'll be different today but we'll see. I also wanted to send you all Las Vegas Souveniers but I'm on a missionary budget. So you'll get Christmas in July when I bring all of that stuff home with me :D I'm still planning on getting the cards out... they might just be a little late.

We helped Desiree and Phoenix have their first FHE last Monday. it was great! It's fun to see people go from "what's the Mormon thing all about?" to "what else can I do to live it?"

We've been caroling this week as a tracting approach. We've gotten a couple little bites. Hoping it'll develop into more. usually it's them talking through the door saying now isn't a good time. But we sing to all the doors and spread the Christmas cheer. I don't knowhow people celebrate Christmas without having faith in Christ. My faith makes it so much more meaningful and magical and sweet. I just hope that we've lifted someone's faith to the Savior. We'll be caroling right up til Christmas Eve. And then we'll be with members. :D

We've been holding a monthly activity called Sisters in Christ. it's meant to be a non-denominational meeting to talk about the Savior and increase our faith. The idea started with some sisters just before us and none of them were here to actually get it started. They were all transferred out pretty quick. So we've been trying to make it work without understanding what the vision of it was to begin with. It's been struggling. We had a meeting on Tuesday and the topic was Virtue. We studied and prepared a lot for it and several people said they were hoping to come. Well, it ended up that one woman who is an active member of the church came. I was really disappointed. But it turned out exactly the way God need it to. I've been asking some questions to God and it was this woman that was able to speak for God to me. Her experiences and testimony strengthened me and was able to see that I'm not a fool and that i'm on the right path. God really can turn a weakness into a strength. a weak program was needed for me to get the answer I needed to be strong.

The Mission Christmas party was super nice. They spoiled all of us with gifts and a sit down dinner. The sisters got more gifts than the elders, naturally. Sisters are so spoiled. it's wonderful. :) I sang for the whole mission. "mary did you know". people came up and said that they felt tingles or they cried. it's so good to be able to use my voice to help others.

Morgan has a tentative baptismal date for January 25th. and Jackie is still going for January 18th. yay!

So here's a fun story. We've been trying to get in contact with a referral for 3 months. no luck. until last night! they let us in. Joey said his goal was to get a temple recommend. I asked if he was a member. and he said no! haha. He had a friend that would use church lingo all the time and they talked about the gospel. he smokes and that's really what's holding him back. but he's a great guy. very good questions, even if they are random. his wife, megan, is more level than he is. doesn't have a religious background but wants a good foundation for their 10 year old daughter. she's open. she wants a guide as she figures out what she believes. they were so warm and welcoming. it just so happened that it was the 10 year anniversary of his brothers death. the cards all lined up. God arranged it. i'm sure of it. I almost gave up but I said "one more time. we'll try again". so good. soo so so good. WE FINALLY FOUND A FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kimberly and Germaine have been sick. And I get the feeling something is going on with their relationship... or something is going on in their life. they've been figuring out if they actually want to get married or not. we'll see what happends.

I'm happy. I have my days of not wanting to do anything but i'm happy. I've been learning that there is a real power and spirit that comes from obedience. even the little things like not writing letters unless it's Monday.  it requires faith and it's so worth it.

my companions and I get a long fairly well, our biggest struggles come from us wanting to be right. so we're working on that. We're working on being more kind, gentle, and sensitive. and it's good. we love to laugh together.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Twas the Night Before Christmas in Las Vegas West - By Elder Torgersen
T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the West,
Everyone was excited to Skype those they love best.
Elder Ririe's Red Jacket was hung up with care,
In hopes an AP Call would soon be there.
The Greenies were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Baptisms danced in their heads.
Sis. Ahlander in her PJ's, President Ahlander in his Cap,
They settled down in the mission home for a much needed nap.

When out at the office, there arose such a clatter,
The Highland Hills Zone awoke to see what was the matter.
Away to the door, Barton flew like a flash,
Bruce opened the window, and threw up the sash.
Highland Hills soon realized that they were not alone,
Down Craig road came the Lone Mountain Zone.
With Tanner in front, and Elder George near,
Elders Matthews and Jacobsen bringing up the rear.

By this time the news of the clatter had spread,
Every Elder and Sister were out of their beds.
Mesquite being far, they did drive with much speed
With Herlin and Seljestad's van in the lead.
Spring Mountain arrived; they made their presence known,
Elder Chapman would have been there, but he couldn't find the phone.
Elkhorn ran their way over, for they saw a glimmer,
Hunsaker led the pack (He's been looking much slimmer).
A yell from Elder Lahti, who's in Tule Springs,
Quieted the crowd, "I think I heard bells ring!"

Sister Mataele said, "Do you see that, up in the sky?"
Elder Diaz remarked, "I guess Reindeer can fly....."
Elder West said, "EH! Do you see a man all in red?
He's got reigns in his hands, and a hat on his head!"
President Ahlander then arrived, and got the zones all in line---
"Come Bonanza, and Lakes, and Redrock, and Sandstone!
South, and Meadows...oh wait....now Sandstone's Las Vegas Zone...”
He did what worked best, and the zones assembled,
In the cold even Utah-boys began to tremble.

The sleigh made its approach, led by 9 big reindeer,
Elder Hunt then called out, "Wait! You can't park here!"
Yet the sleigh landed on down, the driver gave a great chuckle,
He stepped out in black boots, a black belt, and belt-buckle.
He was dressed all in red, and his cheeks were red too,
"Ho, Ho, Ho!" he said, "Nice to meet all of you!
I've heard all about your work, with the Gentile and Jew!"
Elder Golden was confused, Elder Aldridge let out a laugh,
Sisters Pulsipher and Hoffman took 2 GREAT steps back.

"Is this really St. Nick?" Elder Titus asked Elder Woody,
Elder Bloomfield replied, "Maaaaan, if it is...I want a new hoodie!"
St. Nick asked the crowd, in a loud voice,
"What would you want, if you had a choice?"
"New Shoes!" shouted Tews, "A new car!” said Elder Gonzales,
"How 'bout work all year round, in fact...for all of us!"

Now with this response, Santa hushed up the crowd,
"I'll tell you what," He said, loud and proud,
"Let me share a little wisdom, a reminder of sorts,
In this test called "The Mission", "you shoulda worn shorts!"
It's hard work, yes it's true, and that's God's great gift.
He's teaching you patience, how he works, how to be swift.

In all that you do, you're learning about him.
Imagine it as a workout, in God's figurative Gold's Gym.
You're stretching, you’re stressed, and people aren't always nice,
But when your time's up, you're a pearl of great price.
My gifts that I give need batteries, and parts,
But the gifts that you give, they come from your hearts.
Your time here is precious, and your testimony is too,
And when you tell a stranger the Blue Book, ‘Yes, it's true’
God thanks you and smiles, and that's no joke.
At least...that's what he told me, the last time we spoke."

The air was thick, some eyes were teary,
No one knew what to say, he'd spoken so clearly.
So he got back in his sleigh, and it started off with a kick,
(Did they just get a training from Dear ole' St. Nick?)
As the reindeer climbed up, and up, and away,
All the Elders and Sisters think they heard Santa say:

"It's Christmas tomorrow, but we get gifts every day!
An appointment, a paid-for lunch, just knowing exactly what to say!
Look up to the heavens, and thank your Heavenly Dad,
Just work hard, you'll reunite, and both of you will be glad,
That you gave it your all, and your all's what it took.
In the city of Sin, Satan's will, you shook.
You may not get medals, awards, or a pair of new kicks,
But your name will be had for good, and that is what sticks.
Away from the Strip, in the West, you are the light,
So Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a Good night!

Catching Up... Baptisms and Water Bottle Fun

December 16, 2013

Transfers are today.. but we're all staying here! Sister Kellar is pretty new to the area and Sister Bair still hasn't gotten her visa.

It's really been a slow week. Wednesday was taken completely up by a zone conference. One of the Seventy, Elder Snow and his wife, came to instruct us. it was good. just a bit long.

I'm singing for the whole mission on Wednesday at the Christmas party. It's so good to sing again... but i'm also so nervous! I know it sounds okay. i'm just nervous having everyone looking at me. maybe i'll look above my music this time.

We went tracting one night with a Christmas message to share. No one would let us in. not even the one with the huge santa in front! or the one with the german decorations! The last house we tried, she yelled through the door asking who it is. That usually doesn't turn out very well. So we sang We wish you a merry Christmas. that's when she turned her light on... but she didn't open the door. So we sang Silent Night. She opened the door and sang with us. I introduced ourselves and all my nerves were gone that I get from tracting. She said that her husband was sick and now wasn't a good time. But we heard her husband say "tell them to come back". We're going to try them again this next week. It was just so nice to have a positive experience knocking on doors. I wish we could carol year round. that's something I could do!

We're making some progress with the ward... There's a lot of lawyers in this ward if that gives you any idea of what kind of stuff we're working with. hahaha. They're great. The ward has a long way to go so that their efforts are coordinated with everyone else in the ward. We're working on it. Our ward mission leader said we were his favorite missionaries. haha. I just hope that what we're doing here will last longer than the time we've been here... and that it'll be a good influence.

Not really sure what else happened this last week. I just want it to be Christmas so I can talk with y'all!

Love you!
Sister Cornelsen

Desiree and Phoenix got BAPTIZED!!!!! Desiree was so nervous. She said "just dunk me already". so we did! Said a prayer and had the baptism. 20 mins later we started a full program for Phoenix with talks and everything. We're showing them how to do Family Home Evening tonight. :)

Funny Stuff:  We saved up 11 weeks of water bottles.... stacked them in the door way... and then ran right through them! it was great fun :)
